John Mothson reports….

Sidney Sneed. Legendary right back, left back, goalie, midfielder and star striker of the mini-beast premier league - hangs up his boots.

After glittering career which has seen him appear at all 92 of the football leagues grounds around the country (surely a record that will never be equalled?) and now rumoured to be in late middle age (in insect years) Sidney Sneed with his 100 or so legs, famously, became the only mini beast in the game to comprise a whole team single handed (or should that be ‘single legged’?)

Even the combined might of the two Worker-Ant premier league sides ANTchester United and ANTchester City couldn’t defeat Sidney Sneed.

His final game will be remembered for an unfortunate bovine pitch invasion and Sneed’s acrobatic (trademark) bicycle kick which, sadly, proved to be a goal too far for the ageing arthritic arthropod.

Interviewed for Mini-beast MoTD in answer to the question– “what comes next for the superstar of the Mini-Beast Premier League?” Sid had this to say:

“Yeah good to see you Mothie.

I’m gutted to have to retire. It comes to us all I suppose but I am looking forward to promoting grass roots football to youngsters everywhere.

I’ve already worked with the Bees (Brentford FC) taking the game into schools. I would love to work with Nottingham (my spiritual home) which was crowned ‘City of Football’ recently.

But the most fantastic opportunity is linking up with the National Museum of Football to trace the history of the football on a club-by-club basis - to let kids know what really happens at grass roots level of the beautiful game.

Life is a game of two halves and I’m ready for the second half. Bring it on!”
